Mobile app design - Red Dot Design Award

COFE+ is an innovative AI robotic coffee platform designed for tech-savvy urban coffee lovers. As the UX designer, I transformed a functional ordering process into a memorable, interactive experience. Through competitor analysis, user research, and prototyping, I found most users felt disconnected from both brand and technology. My approach focused on emotional engagement, real-time transparency, and AI-powered ordering to help COFE+ stand out.

COFE+ is a robotic café designed for the modern coffee lifestyle, adaptable to a wide range of indoor and outdoor settings—such as offices, airports, parks, and plazas. Users can order coffee through the COFE+ mobile app or directly on the machine’s touchscreen.

What is the client's Goal?

The goal of this project is to design a brand-new mobile app for the North American market that fully embodies the COFE+ brand. The client wanted an experience that stands out from other coffee apps and highlights the unique features of the robotic café. The app needed to deliver an intuitive and seamless user journey, with customization options that reflect both COFE+’s identity and the innovative nature of a robot-driven coffee service.

Our first thought

Our first thought was to break away from the traditional coffee app model. We aimed to create a digital experience that captures the unique, futuristic essence of a robotic café—something instantly recognizable as COFE+ and unlike anything else on the market.

Our first thought: make COFE+ instantly stand out—not just another coffee app, but a truly unique robotic café experience.

What is the problem?

Robotic coffee experiences are often efficient but lack personality and emotional connection. Most coffee apps focus on ordering speed and convenience, but rarely build brand loyalty or deliver a memorable, engaging user journey.

Final result & design

  1. The overall UI is minimal, visually harmonious, and comfortable to read, emphasizing clarity and brand consistency.

  2. Quick access features allow users to place orders, track status, and reorder favorites with minimal steps.

  3. Live robot animations and a branded assistant create an interactive, memorable coffee experience unique to COFE+.

  4. The app integrates an AI assistant that provides quick ordering, personalized recommendations, and real-time guidance—making the coffee experience smarter, smoother, and more efficient.

User research

What we researched on?

How other coffee brands design their apps, focusing on their features, user flows, and overall experience❓

We conducted comprehensive, in-depth competitive reviews of numerous leading coffee apps on the market. We examined their key features, user flows, and interaction patterns to uncover industry best practices and gaps. (Swot analysis, Market research, Benchmarking)

We deeply reviewed top coffee apps, studying their features and user flows to identify best practices and opportunities for COFE+.

What do users want?

We send out survey, and received 200+ responses. Results showed 78% prioritized time-saving, 67% found robot-made coffee interesting, and 86% drank 1-2 cups daily, with 43% drinking 3+ cups. Additionally, 73% valued a pre-order app to avoid peak-hour queues.

The COFE+ Process Bar Widget & Reorder Page

COFE+ Process Bar Widget: Focused on solving the lack of visibility during coffee-making, we designed a robotic-themed progress bar to provide real-time updates and clearly display waiting times in a simple, intuitive way.

Order Page: Created an order page where users can easily view order details and pick-up codes. Added interactive animations to boost engagement and enhance the overall experience.

Simple Order Process & Reorder Process

Simple Ordering Process: Designed a clear ordering flow that highlights the coffee robot's personalization features, allowing users to customize their coffee preferences. Added a pick-up time customization option to save users time and ensure the coffee is served at the perfect temperature when they arrive.

Reorder Process: Created an Order History page and a Favorites page, enabling users to save and quickly reorder their favorite drinks, improving efficiency and user satisfaction.

"How might we design a engaging interactions with the app and COFE+ robot to enhance user experience?"

COFE+ IP & AI Order Recommendation

COFE+ Robot IP: Developed a distinctive IP character for the coffee robot, giving it a unique identity. This robot engages with users in the app, offering tips and order assistance through AI, adding fun and intelligence to the experience.

User Testing

Conclusion

We conducted 2 rounds of user testing with 12 participants each, including young students and workers. After iterating on homepage readability, order status clarity, and favorites layout, the overall task success rate increased from 83.3% to 96.7%, and average satisfaction scores improved across all key screens.

Impact

Conclusion

COFE+ won the Gold Prize at the Red Dot Award 2023. The final product achieved a 96.7% task success rate in user testing, demonstrating outstanding usability and innovation.

User Needs Drive Every Decision

Always start with real user needs—stepping into the user’s shoes shaped every design decision and ensured our solutions addressed true pain points.

Learned to align closely with client goals through regular feedback, while also introducing new ideas—like an AI chatbot—to exceed expectations.

Simplicity, Impact, and Collaboration Matter

Users valued clear benefits like time saved, and even the most innovative features must be easy to use. Cross-team collaboration was essential to delivering a great user experience.

Success came from defining the right design scope—focusing on user behaviors and pain points, not just technical details.
